Education and Skills

Following on from an initiative by the North East Historic Environment Forum, North of England Civic Trust now employs a Heritage Skills Co-ordinator, one of whose objectives is to create and maintain a network of all those involved in Heritage Skill provision (including those involved in training, skilled practitioners and those just starting out).

As the project develops, we will be looking at how the region is responding to the shortage of heritage skills.  We will determine ways of stemming the increasing shortage by examining opportunities, raising awareness and creating the training and partnership opportunities needed to address the shortages in those trades required to restore and maintain the historic environment.  To cope with the huge interest in the Heritage Skills Initiative, we now have a project co-ordinator for Cumbria, Lisa Rothwell-Young, who is working alongside North East Heritage Skills Co-ordinator Andie Harris.

Trades covered by the programme at present include:

Roofing

Lime plastering

Dry stone walling

Stonemasonry

Painting and decorating
