Design and the Built Environment
NECT strongly believes that good design in the built environment is essential to preserving and improving local settings and landscapes, as well as aiding the retention of an historic area’s character.
The Trust is actively involved in many projects that promote an understanding of good design principles, demonstrate how design influences its surroundings and publicise efforts being made to provide sustainable principles that meet current and future demands.
Some of our schemes include the Hadrian Awards, a biennial architectural scheme promoting high quality design in the North East and Cumbria and, until recently, the Design and Historic Environment Champions Club, an English Heritage, CABE and One NorthEast initiative facilitated by Northern Architecture, in partnership with NECT, to install and empower member and officer Champions in every local authority, so that they can make a real difference to the quality of the built environment in their area.
